| M chan, our friend X san wa gakusei dewa arimasen deshita (..or x san wa gakusei dewa/ja nakatta..but this one is a little informal) -x san wa gakusei dewa/ja arimasen(formal/polite) -x san wa gakusei dewa/ja nai (informal/slang) both sentences above mean : x san is not a student, but the 2nd is less formal. So to turn them to past ==>x san was not a student : -x san wa gakusei dewa/ja arimasen deshita(polite) -x san wa gakusei dewa/ja nakatta.(slang) hope this helps^_^ Arigatou YzN san | |

| YzN san, ohayou gozaimasu! yes true! it's the way u said it. When you want to thank for a favor already done for you, you use gozaimashita. (past) When you want to thank for a favor not yet done for you (promised with it or you expect it) you use gozaimasu (^_^) | |

| bme san, The masu form is WAKARIMASU = To understand. The dictionary form is WAKARU The TE form is WAKATTE rememebr the TE form + IMASU that mean a progressive action? WAKATTE IMASU = I know/understand that. (wakarimasu sometimes is used as to know) remember the dictionary form from IMASU? it is IRU So it can become WAKATTE IRU when being informal...to make things easier Japanese in informal conversations usually drop the 'i' from wakatteiru..so it becomes wakatteru so when u say : wakatteru yo! = i know that! ofcourse this dropping applies to all other verbs : miteru (miteiru = miteimasu = im seeing) tabeteru (tabeteiru = tabeteimasu = im eating) wakarimashita ka? mata ne! | |

| Arigatou Amani Sensei ... hai, wakarimashita .
But this ( dictionary form ) thing confuses me , what are its uses ? to search in dictionary ? or also in speaking ( like : wakatte iru ) ?
mata ne! | |

| yea ofcourse it has its uses. you can always use dictinary form instead of masu form if you were in an informal situation, like with friends and so on. Ofcourse there are also needs to use dictionary form even in formal speeches in some cases (in some sentence patterns and sometimes when the verb is not the main thing in the sentence). i guess we will take some examples after we know more about the dictionary form. | |

| This picture is taken from a western tv show (Heroes). This japanese guy believed he was different and was here for a reason, he belived he could manipulate time and place continum. Anyways, after some attempts he managed to transport himself to Timesquare in New York. There he yelled "YATTA" or something that sounded like it. The show translated it as "I did it", but I dont get it. Does it really mean "I did it" ? Whats the verb "do" in japanese (yatta ?) ? and can you please give me some examples. Sorry if it looks toooo long! | |

| shado san, yes. Yatta = i did it let me explain more : so far we learned SHIMASU = to do there is another verb which means TO DO. It is YARIMASU. (masu form) / YARU (dictionary form) / YATTA (past dictinary form) YARIMASU(present masu form) --> YARIMASHITA (past masu form) YARU (present dictionary form) --> YATTA (past dictionary form) using the dictionary form makes your talk a little informal. Yatta is used alot whenever u want to say : I DID IT! Maramu san, yes no class on wednesday ^^; | |

| uchuujin san, well i hope more people will join. The problem is that this new section is not well announced,, so if you think there might be anyone interested please invite them ^^ maramu san, arigatou, well my exam wasn't bad..but i wanted to do better ^^; For your questions : 1) "did u eat already?"..there is a word used here in the meaning of "already". This word is "MOU". So we ask : "(anata wa) mou tabemashita ka?" = have u already eaten? or just a question of the past : "anata wa tabemashita ka?" = "did u eat?" Notice we dont use "desu" with masu verbs. ..and yes : "Xsan wa tomodachi deshita ka?" is correct. 2)the day after tomorrow is : "asatte" 3)the day before yesterday is : "ototoi" 4) for the next thing : *Next monday : It is said as "monday of the next week"..so it is "raishuu no getsuyoubi" , raishuu = next week *Next week (literally COMING week): raishuu *next(coming) year: rainen *next(coming) month : raigetsu * "next" alone is "TSUGi"..ex.: next station: tsugi no eki next bus : tsugi no basu. "Coming next, the sports news!" : "tsugi wa, SPO-TSU no NYUUSU desu!". (spo-tsu and nyusu are written in katakana) 5) IN : i prefer to express this as "AFTER 15days/2hours..." After is ATO. So we say : NI JIKAN NO ATO NI TESUTO GA ARIMASU : there is a test after 2 hours. *juu go nichi no ato ni : after 15 days Hope this helped^^ ganbatte kudasai! | |
