| minasan, welcome to the Kanji study center. I wont be asking you to learn kanji in our classes..at least not before weeks from now. But for those of you who are interested in kanji, this is your place Remember KANJI are symbols that hold meanings, and can be read in different ways depending on whether they were alone or part of a word of 2 kanji or more. example : *Now = いま =IMA ..written as 今 in kanji. That symbol means now and read as IMA when its alone. *Day = にち =NICHI..written as 日 in kanji. The symbol means day and is read nichi when its alone. (can be read as HI and means sun ) ok now what do you think this word means : 今日Without knowing its reading, we can find that it has IMA and NICHI (NOW + DAY) ..so what it the NOW DAY? NOWDAY is THIS DAY ..in other words TODAY. TODAY = KYOU...so 今日 is read as KYOU and means TODAY. Notice how we could guess the meaning without knowing the reading..since the reading becomes different when a kanji is part of a word. Usually, the kanji reading when its alone is called kun reading (KUN YOMI) and it is the original JAPANESE reading. The kanji reading when its part of a word is called ON YOMI / ON reading..and its a reading originated from china.(That doesn't mean that in china they are read in the ON yomi way, it is just derived from it). Remember kANJI are made in China. Eventhough there are few KANJI that are made in Japan. Todays kanji lesson ends here. .........................................................................続く ( = つづく) | |

| Great topic Sensei, I were waiting for it . Can you give us more information ( and examples ) about ON YOMI and KUN YOMI , onegaishimasu . And there's the thing I want to know : when the first letter changes like these examples ( dai + sora = oo zora ) , ( hi + hana = hi bana ) ; is there a specific rules for this ? I know the letter will change to the similar letter with two dashes ( I think these 2 dashes are called dakuten , ne ? ) but what confuses me that it doesn't always change like this manner ; for example : ( ten + ki = tenki ) but ( otoko + ki = otoko gi ) ( still having nihono problem on my PC so I used romaji , but I understand your first Kanji lesson ) . | |

| about on and kun yomi, i will talk about that in later posts.^^ About your second question : hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm........ i think there is no specific rule...but from what can i see (or from the words that popped up to my mind now) i guess that you use the dakuten when the word is "original".. i mean a word that you form. like oozora..a big sora , instead we could say ookii sora..but for words that are originally used it remains as is like tenki.. (not sure though but this is what i can see initially) i know its not so clear ..but in the same time you don't have to worry much about it since we don't "create" these words. we learn them as vocabulary. ^^; mata ne! | |

| ra2oosh san, learning kanji can be one of the most challenging parts of learning nihongo. I think that it is also the most OMOSHIROI thing you can do! Kanji is not always two HIRAGANA. it can be one, two..etc. but i don't think they exceed 4 hiragana learning kanji as most books do is boring, it is not fun to see a kanji and learn all its possible readings and stuff. The fun way is to learn some vocabulary in hiragana first, then when you feel you became familiar with these words i guess you will be more excited to know the kanji for it. rather than knowing the word for the first time! ^^ | |

| Well , linguistically it's wrong ... because it's not a japanese word ... but we do it for fun .
The nihongo doesn't appear now on my laptop thoroughly so I didn't know what you have written ; but I'll try to find a nice composition for your name in Amman in sha' ALLAH . | |
